The Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force has been established to identify priority pathways for industry and federal, provincial and territorial governments to restructure, retool and transform Canada’s forest sector for long-term competitiveness and sustainability.
The deadline for written submissions was March 16, 2026 and the window has been closed.
The forest sector is a cornerstone of Canada’s economy and identity. For generations, our forests have supported communities and powered local economies.
In response to ongoing trade pressures and the need to diversify and ensure long-term competitiveness, Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced the launch of the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force to identify pathways to restructure, retool and transform Canada’s forest sector.
Members of the Task Force held their first meeting on January 19, 2026. Over the next 90 days, the Task Force will engage with industry, provinces and territories, Indigenous groups, labour organizations and others, and will gather public comments through a web portal.
At the end of the 90 days, the Task Force will deliver a report and roadmap with their final recommendations to the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.
The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, selected 8 leaders, including 2 Co-Chairs, to be members of the Task Force based on their expertise and knowledge of different aspects of the forest sector value chain, while ensuring strong voices represent forest sector workers, Indigenous economic development, capital markets, and housing.
